“She is a mother”, painting by BENSACI CHAIMA, Algeria. “Mother replies”, poem by AERONWY THOMAS, UK

(copyright of the artist)

I do not hate you now
for your splenic verse
words have no meaning here
I use them one more time
to temper yours.

I never felt for you
the hate you express,
I thought of you as dross
from golden age
in a memory I’ve lost,
my own life the dregs
of a full glass of wine
drunk before your time.
I must have loved you once,
begin, “my darling daughter”.
